How to Use Berg and what Berg is

What is Berg?

Berg is a bot created to help chess players learn and improve through using simple and human language to explain chess ideas and concepts that otherwise would be difficult to understand by simply looking at chess analysis though an engine like stockfish. Berg is not an engine and sometimes will struggle to evaluate positions perfectly, though he is learning fast!

Berg is able to evaluate positions and give explanations to users about how their game or position was impacted by choices that they made throughout the game. Berg can be asked questions or asked to explain ideas in the game at any time. Just like a coach!

Berg is a pretty easy-going guy, but for the best results I would paste a PGN or FEN directly into the chat box and tell him what color pieces you are playing in the game. If a PGN is annotated with engine information (like is done automatically on lichess.org after performing an engine analysis) its even better and will save you some credits too. As stated above, Berg is not an engine and has to call stockfish to help when PGN or FEN files are not annotated.

After getting your overall feedback, feel free to ask Berg questions about specific moves or positions using chess notation or regular speech. The purpose of Berg is to be like an interactive coach, so the more in-depth questions you ask about the position, the more effective Berg is as a coach.

If you are chatting with Berg and you find that he makes a mistake or misremembers where a piece is on the board, let him know! Berg is a pretty sharp guy and will correct his mistakes and give you an updated analysis if you find that he has made a mistake. Just like all of our users, Berg aims to improve too, so help a walrus out!

Berg was made on an AI bot creator website called Poe. Poe is a platform where creators can make bots with specific instructions, parameters, and tools that make them effective at completing specific tasks. Berg was created in this way to make his use free for our users and free for WalrusChess. This ensures that WalrusChess can be used and enjoyed by the most people possible at the lowest cost possible.

Right now the easiest way to access Berg is through the website link at the top of the page or through Poe's bot finder. To use and communicate with Berg, all you need is a way to access Poe and a free Poe account that gives users tokens each day that can be spent to access and chat with bots like Berg.

While WalrusChess would love to have Berg built directly into walruschess.com, that is too expensive for us to do at the moment. With enough users and interest though, it is something we would love to do in the future.
